death at Morning house felt very similar to the Truly, Devious series:

  • Rich family with a big creepy house
  • Timline split between a mystery in the present and another mystery in the 1920s-1930s
  • Gang of teens at the house led by a female main character determined to get to the bottom of the mystery

One big difference: Death at Morning House did hav a f/f romance. I think this was a new relationship element for a Maureen Johnson main character. If I’m wrong, correct me in comments!

What I Did Like about Death at Morning House

Maureen seems like a bit of a history nerd, as since the 2010s, she has been using historical elements in her books.

Death at Morning House featured a contemporary murder mystery AND a 1920s historical plot about the death of two siblings in a rich family.

The patriarch of that rich family was Philip Ralston, a follower of the real-life John Harvey Kellogg, the inventor of modern breakfast cereal.

You might have seen Unfrosted on Netflix, Jerry Seinfeld’s comic re-imiagining of the rivalry between Kellogg’s and Post over the invention of breakfast toaster tarts. That show takes place in the 1960s but is more Kellogg’s lore.

The real life John H. Kellogg had some ahead-of-his-time ideas, like the benefits of yogurt for intestinal health. He also had some extremely harmful beliefs, like his support of eugenics and segregation. He was a Seventh Day Adventist who believed in clean living (no drinking, smoking, or meat.) He founded a sanitarium (more a health spa than a psychiatric hospital). As in the book, he had eight adopted children.

In Death at Morning House, the main character Marlowe (who must be a nod to Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe that few teens will pick up on) has just suffered an awkward romantic rejection.

She decides to head to Ralston Island (one of the Thousand Islands, located in the Saint Lawrence River between the US and Canada) to take a job as a tour guide at Morning House.
