MY RUIN AND RISING PLAYLIST

Earlier this week, my blogger friend Patrick from the Bookshelves emailed to ask if I’d create a playlist for my current read for his feature Booking Through Music.  I said sure. Then I realized I was reading Ruin and Rising and felt at a bit of a loss.  I mean, this is the kind of book that needs a composer to write its soundtrack.

So … since there’s no such thing as Ravkan music — though for all I know, Leigh Bardugo wrote some! — I decided to do research on Russian music —  choral music, classical music, pop, alternative music, rap — and came up with this out-of-the-box playlist.

Here’s the playlist:

Track one:  Do Not Avert the Face (from Russian Sacred Music: The Divine Wisdom of St. Sofia Praise We In Chants)

If you’ve read Siege and Storm, you know that Alina is now revered as a saint, so I thought a little Russian choral music was in order.

Track two:  Inside/ Louna

Louna  — a Russian alternative/punk rock band, formed in Moscow in 2008 – was a real find for me. Their earlier songs are in Russian but this song is in English and I’ve become kind of obsessed with it.

Track three:  Walking on the Edge/ Basta

I don’t listen to much rap, but I actually like listening to rap in other languages. I have no idea what this Russian rapper is saying – all I caught was one “dasvidanya” but I like the idea of Darkling as a bad boy rapper.

Track four: Ty uznayesh yeye / Korni

Korni is a Russian boy band and because there are three guys in the Grisha Trilogy, I’m imagining some kind of crazy dream sequence where they all sing…

Track five: The Firebird/ Stravinsky

Got to have some classical Russian music, and since the Firebird is a part of the story, I had to choose this.

  1. What an interesting challenge to come up with music for Ruin and Rising! I love that Firebird is on there; though I've only read the first two books, it seems appropriate to me. Also very interested in the Audrey Hepburn book as my friend has a long-time obsession with her and though BaT is not a fave, I do admire her myself.

  2. I got the three Netgalley books as well. I'm still a little hesitant about Stitching Snow. I really want to love it, but I've heard a bit of chatter about it not being too great, so I'm going to hold off a bit and wait for a few reviews first. The cover is just so gorgeous!! 🙂 I hope you enjoy all of your new goodies!!

  3. I'm very eager to read Stitching Snow and Killer Instinct! great haul 🙂 A whole book written in emoticons? I've not heard of that one before. Enjoy and I can't wait to hear what you think of the NetGalley books.

  4. I'm really intrigued by Stitching Snow, plus that cover is beautiful! I have The Naturals sitting on my bookshelf just waiting to be read. I didn't know there was a sequel coming out, so I think I'm going to have to read it sooner now! I'm definitely going to have to check out the Ruin and Rising playlist, plus that's a really cool idea!
Here's my STS if you want to check it out 🙂

  5. Ahh i hope your enjoy Stitching Snow! i'm super excited about it and so far have heard nothing but good things and eeeeep you got Killer Instinct! *stares*
Plus i love the ruin and rising playlist since it totally fits the atmosphere of the book.

  6. The TTYL series took my surprise when I read them a few years ago. It is actually pretty fantastic and edgy and real and I LOVED it. You should give it a try. I can send you my copy of any of them. 🙂

  7. Oh Stitching Snow has such a pretty cover!! I have never heard of TTYL series so yeah I don't think it's for me. yolo looks interesting but once again not for me. I like your playlist though. I might borrow it once I start that series. Great post, Jen 🙂

  8. I am so tempted to request Stitching Snow. It sounds so good and something I'd absolutely adore .-. One of these days I am probably going to give in .-.
I am definitely curious about The Naturals series since I did enjoy Every Other Day by the author.. but that love triangle is putting me off. 😀

TTYL is definitely not something for me. I actually came across the series a while ago and I had a good laugh because of how much it was NOT for me. I cannot stand text talk for the most part and a whole book written in text talk would probably give me nightmares 😛 😛

    HAPPY READING, Jen! 🙂

  9. Love the playlist, Jen! Stitching Snow was a bit rate copy cat of Lunar Chronicles. It wasn't all bad, but it wasn't all that great either.

    Have a great week!

  10. Hahaha the use of the emoji in this post was great xD I don't read the ttyl series for the same reason, so I get you! My lack of interest in YOLO is for the same reasons.

However, like you, I AM SUPER EXCITED FOR STITCHING SNOW! It is deserving of the caps because, yes, I am that excited! Not only am I getting a lunar chronicles vibe, but I'm getting a really unique vibe. I have yet to find a snow white retelling that I LOVE yet so I think STITCHING SNOW and well…WINTER may be the two that do it for me.

  11. I read the Internet Girls series in middle school, so I checked out YOLO when I first heard about. I can't imagine what I was thinking back then…

  12. Wow, Yolo sounds really interesting! I've been hearing wonderful things about Stitching Snow, though, so I cannot wait to see what you think of them 🙂 wonderful playlist, Jen! I can't wait to start on the Grisha Triology!

  13. That is so hilarious, I can't believe there's a book called yolo! I hate that saying lol. It reminds me of yoyo 😛 Anyway, Stitching Snow reminds me of Cinder so much, I hope it's good and not just a rip off. Have a lovely week!

  14. I can't wait to read Stitching Snow and Killer Instinct. And I can't imagine reading YOLO. I'm too old for that, too…I already have to look up a lot of abbreviations. 😛

  15. Very cool playlist! I love that you tried to capture the feel of Ravka. Can't wait to hear what you think of Stitching Snow, I'm curious about that one. Hope you enjoy your new reads!
