New Boarding School Book: When We Were Monsters
Must-read New Boarding School Book: When We Were Monsters by Jennifer Niven is a chilling addition to your list of boarding school books, set on a elite campus in winter. Keep it in mind for your next chilling mood read!

New Boarding School Suspense: When We Were Monsters
To avid YA readers, author Jennifer Niven needs no introduction. She wrote All the Bright Places (2015), a heartwrenching book about love, grief and friendship.
When We Were Monsters has some of those elements, but is more of a boarding school suspense story. A group of students is accepted into a small and competitive January program for aspiring writers.
Meredith Graffam, the leader of the workshop is a talented but controversial writer. Her methods for coaching the students are strange and a bit creepy. They must make videos, answer tough questions, and confront their own personal demons.
The story is told by Effy and Arlo. She’s still haunted by the tragic death of her mother, an incident that got her father sentenced to prison. He can’t forget a tragedy in his past that left his best friend dead. Meredith should understand: her own best friend died in the very woods they are living and working in.
Twisty and suspenseful, this story will really keep you guessing. The wintry boarding school atmosphere was fun and atmospheric.
For fans of the One of Us Is Lying series by Karen McManus, Neverworld Wake by Marissa Pessl, and by That Weekend by Kara Thomas. It also reminded me a little bit of I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makkai.
