Review of Grace and Henry’s Holiday Movie Marathon
I should really read blurbs ahead of time, but what can I say? I enjoy being surprised sometimes.
Grace and Henry’s Holiday Movie Marathon by Matthew Norman is NOT really a romance in the traditional sense of the word. It is a story with romance. It also takes place over the course of over a year, which includes one Christmas (and a bonus Thanksgiving too!)
Grace’s husband Tim died of cancer within the last year, and she’s doing the best she can to rebuild her life and worry about her two kids, Ian and Bella.
Henry’s wife Brynn died suddenly in a plane crash, and ever since then he can’t bear to live in their shared home. So he’s staying with his parents, playing video games, and waiting for his grief to dull.
Grace and Henry bond over their love of holiday movies and begin to hang out as friends. By the end of the book, yes there is romance on the horizon, but this is a grief book as much as a romance.
The story also had a cinematic quality, which was sort of appropriate given all the movies references. It felt a little like an old school 1990s Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan movie in ALL the best ways!
