New Spring Suspense: Boring Asian Female

As part of AAPI Heritage Month, I’m looking at new 2026 titles by young Asian American authors. I really enjoyed Boring Asian Female by Canwen Xu, an edgy suspense title about a college student who spirals after a classmate gets the coveted acceptance she wanted for herself.

Genre: unhinged suspense fiction with a darkly humorous tone similar to Yellowface by R.F. Kuang.

Elizabeth Zhang is a high-achieving Chinese-American student at Columbia University who decides that she would like to go to law school (“it’s what you did if you wanted to be rich but hated math.”)

But Elizabeth isn’t just aiming for law school. She wants Harvard Law School (as Elle Woods said, “what, like it’s hard?”)

Well, yes. Getting into Harvard IS hard. Elizabeth is incredulous after she receives a rejection.

She demands answers from her school guidance counselor, who suggests that Elizabeth might be just too “average Asian.” As if that isn’t upsetting enough, Elizabeth learns that a classmate, Laura Kim, was accepted to Harvard Law.

Saying that Elizabeth spirals is an understatement. She sets off on an unhinged campaign that’s one part spy mission, one part smear campaign, and one part self-reinvention.

You’d think that a character this crazed, vindictive and ruthless would be deeply unlikeable, but the author somehow makes Elizabeth a funny and relatable person. Who among us hasn’t wondered, “why her and not me?”

While not a traditional mystery or thriller, Boring Asian Female is propulsive (an overused word but it fits!) with some shocking twists at the end.

Like Yellowface, this book offers insight into how Asian females are perceived (and pitted against one another.)
