A Taste of Magic by Tricia O’Malley is book two in the Scottish Charms series, set in the small Scotland town of Briarhaven, where all the residents are magic, and the tourists think it’s all pretend. I think the book can be read as a standalone, but you’ll probably want to read book one first.
Lyra McGregor is the middle McGregor sister and still waiting for her magic to mature and her familiar to appear. When the town gets the news that Briarhaven is hosting the Bewitching Bakeoff. Since Lyrs is a hearth witch and very at home in the kitchen, she decides to enter. The show’s format is to pair an expert baker with a novice, and Lyra is shocked to be paired with her high school sweetheart, Rabbie. Their first love ended badly, when her family moved away and she felt he dumped her.
Of course, there’s much more to the story than that. The best part of this second chance romance was (for me) the YEARNING. Is there anything better than yearning??? Clearly there is a misunderstanding at the root of their breakup, and it’s fun waiting to find out what it was, as these two are still crazy about each other.
The bake-off was so much fun, involving multiple town residents and some good-natured kitchen rivalry. And the Charms coven, a group of witches who socialize, help each other, and practice a little magic, were fun to hang out with.
If you’re looking for a witchy fall romance, A Taste of Magic is a wonderful pick. The Scotland setting is autumn perfection and the plot was funny and touchingly romantic.
