Happy Ending was my first book by Chloe Liese book, but her vibe and writing style reminded me a lot of Emily Henry’s.
Happy Ending is a friends to lovers romance. Like Henry’s books, Happy Endings is filled with lots of witty banter and features a very slow burn pace to the romantic plot. The story is told with a dual timeline (Then/Now).
Bookseller Thea and up-and coming chef Alex meet in Pittsburgh, bonding over the fact that her ex is now seeing his. Alex lies to save face on their behalf, claiming he and Thea are very old friends (hmmm, that does sound a little like Funny Story, though the books are quite different.)
What I did like about the book was that Alex’s ex, Jen, is not portrayed as a man-stealing homewrecker, but as someone who deserves a happy ending of her own.
Happy Ending had:
- A very slow burn friends to lovers romance (heavy on banter, slow burn)
- A lot of humor and heart
- A relationship that really grows and develops over time
- One PG-13 rated sex scene, so not super spicy.
