Pride and Prejudice (1995): The BBC Miniseries

Many P & P fans still call this adaptation definitive version. It aired on BBC One from September 24 to October 29, 1995, and came to the US on A&E in January 1996.
| The basics | |
|---|---|
| Format | Six episodes, about 5.5 hours total |
| Written by | Andrew Davies |
| Directed by | Simon Langton |
| Elizabeth and Darcy | Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth |
The cast and what they did next:
| Actor | Role | What came next |
|---|---|---|
| Colin Firth | Mr. Darcy | Played Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones's Diary (a wink at this role), starred in Mamma Mia! and Kingsman, and won the Best Actor Oscar for The King's Speech |
| Jennifer Ehle | Elizabeth Bennet | Won two Tony Awards on Broadway and appeared in The King's Speech (with Firth again!), Contagion, and Zero Dark Thirty |
| Alison Steadman | Mrs. Bennet | Became a household name in the UK as Pam in Gavin & Stacey |
| Julia Sawalha | Lydia Bennet | Already known for Absolutely Fabulous; voiced Ginger in Chicken Run |
| Anna Chancellor | Caroline Bingley | Fresh off Four Weddings and a Funeral; later starred in The Hour |
How it was received
It was a huge hit. About 10 to 11 million people in the UK watched each episode, and the VHS release sold out fast. Jennifer Ehle won the BAFTA for Best Actress, and the series also won an Emmy for costume design and a Peabody Award.
The moment everyone remembers? Darcy taking a swim in the lake at Pemberley and running into Elizabeth in his wet shirt. Fun fact: that scene isn't in the book. Screenwriter Andrew Davies made it up, and it turned Colin Firth into a heartthrob overnight.
Where to watch (In the US and as of October 2026)
Stream it on Hulu, Peacock, or BritBox, or watch free with ads on The Roku Channel. You can also buy it on Amazon, Apple TV, or Fandango at Home.
Watch it if: you want the most faithful version, with time for every character and a slow burn that takes its sweet time.
Pride & Prejudice (2005): The Movie

Ten years later, director Joe Wright squeezed the story into a gorgeous, moody two-hour film. It opened in the UK on September 16, 2005, and in the US on November 23, 2005.
| The basics | |
|---|---|
| Format | Feature film, 129 minutes |
| Written by | Deborah Moggach |
| Directed by | Joe Wright (his first feature film) |
| Elizabeth and Darcy | Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen |
The cast and what they did next
| Actor | Role | What came next |
|---|---|---|
| Keira Knightley | Elizabeth Bennet | Earned an Oscar nomination for this role at 20, then starred in Atonement and The Imitation Game (another Oscar nod) and Netflix's Black Doves |
| Matthew Macfadyen | Mr. Darcy | Became Tom Wambsgans on Succession, winning Emmys and a Golden Globe |
| Rosamund Pike | Jane Bennet | Oscar-nominated for Gone Girl; won a Golden Globe for I Care a Lot; starred in Saltburn |
| Carey Mulligan | Kitty Bennet | This was her first movie! She later earned Oscar nominations for An Education, Promising Young Woman, and Maestro |
| Jena Malone | Lydia Bennet | Played Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games films |
| Kelly Reilly | Caroline Bingley | Became Beth Dutton on Yellowstone |
| Donald Sutherland | Mr. Bennet | Played President Snow in The Hunger Games; he died in 2024 |
| Judi Dench | Lady Catherine | Already a legend (and M in the Bond films) |
How it was received
The film was a box office hit and received four Oscar nominations.
Austen purists grumbled about the cuts and changes. Darcy's first proposal happens in the pouring rain, and the second takes place in a misty field at dawn. But many viewers fell hard for its swoony, cinematic style, and Macfadyen's hand flex after helping Elizabeth into a carriage is internet famous. The US version even added an extra romantic scene at the very end.
Where to watch (US, as of October 2026): Stream it on BritBox, or rent or buy it on Amazon, Apple TV, or Fandango at Home. It's also easy to find on DVD and Blu-ray.
Watch it if: you want maximum swoon in one sitting.

Which Pride and Prejudice is most faithful to the book?
The 1995 miniseries. With nearly six hours to work with, it keeps almost every scene and character. The 2005 movie trims a lot to fit into two hours.
Do I need to watch the older versions before the Netflix series?
No! But if you have a free weekend before December 3, the 1995 series is a great warm-up, and the 2005 movie is perfect for a cozy movie night.
Is the lake scene in the book?
No. Screenwriter Andrew Davies invented it for the 1995 series.
Which Darcy is the best?
