Yes, I know the “in” trend in 2020s romance is lots of cozy banter and heart-eyes flirting. Reading these books is like watching a cute montage in a movie.

But sometimes you want more. More drama, more stakes, more humor, more tension. Christmas Fling felt like all my favorite 90s rom coms. Think of The Wedding Date crossed with How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Laura is moving into her new flat when a) her flatmate Callum greets her in a towel and b) his parents then show up and think she’s his girlfriend. When Callum’s parents beg the two of them to come to Scotland for Christmas, Laura agrees.

Callum isn’t happy about this, so Laura offers to be as objectionable as possible so that his family won’t be upset when he dumps her and heads to Paris (instead of working on the family farm.)

What transpires is a hilarious story about a big city neurosurgeon visiting a small Scottish town while pretending to be someone else. (For some reason, Callum has told them she’s a vegan masseuse.)

Christmas Fling Had:

  • Fake Dating Trope
  • Scottish Highlands location
  • Lots of small town holiday charm
  • Open door romance (one scene)
  • Themes of defying parental expectations and following your heart
  • Publication date: October 14, 2025 by Putnam Books. Thanks so much to them for the advance review copy.

This book is Perfect For:

Fans of 90s rom coms who like a blend of comedy, plot hijinks and romance!
